Heather’s Losin’ It…

Well, that’s not quite true.

Mama’s losin’ it.

No, not my mama.

I’m talking about Mama Kat, host of the pretty much world famouswriter’s workshop.

I discovered Mama Kat on a blog I stalk read a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been itchin’ to jump in on one of her link-up parties every since, and so here we are. About to participate in my first writer’s workshop and my first linky party. (Which basically means there are bazillions of other bloggers out there writing about this same topic, or one of her other suggested topics, and we can all do a virtual meet and greet once they are all posted on her site.) Aren’t you so excited?!

Let’s just jump on in…

The topic I chose for today is “Describe what it was like meeting a boyfriend’s family for the first time.”

Mama’s Losin’ It

I’m gonna stick with my favorite boyfriend for this one…you know, the one who is now my husband. Good ol’ Christopher.

Chris and I met at a single’s bible study. For a couple of months we only hung out within the context of the whole group, until he one day texted me to see if I wanted to “go out.” If memory serves me correctly, at the time of the infamous “first meeting,” we hadn’t even arranged our first date yet…definitely still in the very early stages of “talking.” He’s smooth like that. 😉

The Meeting

One Sunday morning…I slept in. Skipped out on church. Snoozed away.

Bad Heather.

Chris called to see if I wanted to go eat lunch with “everyone.” By everyone, I assumed he meant our singles group.

I threw on some casual clothes and drove my little church-skippin’ booty to Chili’s…only to be greeted by Chris. And basically his entire family. Parents. Sister. Heck, even the foreign exchange student was there.

I don’t remember a whole lot from that first meeting…I didn’t even have a chance to be nervous because it was all sprung on me so fast. I remember that they were friendly…that Juan (the exchange student) ate a lot…and that they obviously were very close-knit.

Oh yes, and that they laughed. A lot. Like about-to-get-kicked-out-of-Chili’s a lot.

Of course, I felt like a total heathen and more than a little embarrassed that I had missed church when they had gone. And I did get the impression that it was a bit of an interview, as Chris definitely was looking for his family’s approval. (Not to brag…but he definitely got it. What can I say…parents love me! *wink*)

And the rest, as they say, is history…

It’s something we can laugh about now, but in the moment there was a part of me that totally wanted to kill him right there in front of Chili’s. (Turns out his family wanted to also…they were just as blindsided as I was!)

In the 4+ years since that first meeting, we’ve all gotten to know each other much better, and I’m so thankful for my godly, goofy, good-hearted in-law family.

Guess I’ll forgive him. 😉

KEEP CALM & TRY NOT TO LOSE IT!

P.S. – In addition to my immediate in-law family, I gained a super fun cousin-in-law…Matthew the Magnificent! He came in for our Graduation / 4th of July party yesterday and *blew*our*minds* with his magic tricks.

Then, using make-shift torches made from items he picked up at Wal-Mart, he ate fire. Oh yeah. You read that correctly.

I’ve got a fire-eater in the family. Beat that. 😉

<Disclaimer: Kids…and my husband…don’t try this at home!!!>
