Spooktacular Date!

Odds are, if you’ve ever heard of “Mineral Wells, TX”…then you’ve heard of the Baker Hotel. Back in it’s hay-day, it was big and beautiful and cutting edge in the hotel industry. (For example, it was the first hotel in the United States to have a pool!) As the story goes, it was a favorite vacation spot to the stars…like the 3 Stooges, and had every luxury imaginable. Grandeur is the only word to describe it.

A month or so ago, I saw a sign on the sidewalk near the Baker advertising a “Ghost Walk” every Saturday night. The more I thought about it, the more fun I thought it would be. Could it be the perfect October date night outing?!

I finally talked Chris into it, and that’s how, this past Saturday night, we found ourselves on the steps of the Baker at 9 p.m. standing in the dark, with a mist in the air and lightening flashing off in the distance.

Surprisingly, we were among some 150 odd people who showed up for a little spooky adventure. Before the tour officially started, Chris and I walked around, peering in windows and swapping ghost stories with people around us. “Orbs! Orbs! We got orbs in our picture over here!” is something we heard over and over…and, not gonna lie, we tried to capture a few orbs ourselves. 😉

I’m not going to spill all the ghost stories, because I definitely think that if you are in this area it’s worth stopping and taking the tour. The guide has a lot of fun ghost stories and tons of cool Mineral Wells / Baker Hotel history, and the experience is a totally fun one! (And no, we didn’t “see” any ghosts, and nothing overly scary happened…but it was fun nonetheless!)

What I will share with you are a few pictures of our adventure…

Our official “Ghost Walk” bracelets!

The app I downloaded specifically for the tour…”Ghost Radar!” (That green dot there? It shows that a ghost was standing right next to me.

A few pictures inside…taken through a boarded up window…

Is it a mist? Is it a ghost?

Orbs! (Or flashlights shining at windows. Whatever!)

Oh my gosh, this building was my favorite stop on the tour! “Crazy City Motors”…what I learned here blew my mind!!!

Beware…there is a ghost in this picture!!!

Chris with that flashlight…he was serious business!

Two hours and probably 5 blocks later, the tour was over and Chris and I meandered back to the Baker laughing and embracing the “spookiness” of the night. We took one last lap with a couple of new friends we made along the way, then went home and called it a night.

Thankfully, no ghosts followed us home.
